The Pressure Cooker

You are not going to believe this little fact...the pressure cooker was invented in 1679 by Denis Papin (Wiki).  It was an airtight pot that used steam to cook food quickly.  It is an amazing process that has been around for years and is making a comeback.  (old becomes new again)  People for years have been making wonderful meals using the method of trapped steam to speed cooking.   In todays world where more people are eating at home and learning to cook all over again a pressure cooker would be a worth while investment.

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Joe corrected me when he read the Pressure Cooker Chicken recipe. He reminded me that he was the one who told me about the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.  One of the guys at work had told him about it and how great it was for cooking a quick meal.  These guys travel a lot with their job and live in hotels or campers and work long crazy hours  so they look for easy quick ways to get a hot homecooked meal. He was excited to tell me about it but I am not a fan of gadgets and didn't really listen.  I am sorry I didn't but at least now I have an Instant Pot and he had a great opportunity to say "see I told ya!"... lol

Why I purchased an Instant Pot Pressure Cooker...

I have been cooking with a pressure cooker for years.  What I used to use is a pan that goes on top of the stove.  It has a valve that a weight sits on. You change the weight to get the desired pounds of pressure.    Once it is at the correct pressure the steam will start releasing out the valve.  You constantly have to keep an eye on it and regulate the temperature. It is nerve racking.  With the electric pressure cooker you set the time and it does the work.  It is wonderful to know I don't have to keep running over every few minutes to check it.

Makes food moist.  The pressure forces liquid into the food which makes the food cook faster and also helps tenderize tough meat. The moisture also preserves the food color and flavor. I can promise you if cooked correctly a roast will fall off the bone and cubed steak with gravy is so tender you cut it with a fork.

Food retains its nutrition.  The food is cooked much faster in a Instant Pot Pressure cooker so less minerals or vitamins are destroyed or lost by dilution because the moisture is maintained in the food that is pressure cooked. It can preserve the nutrients by 90 -95%. I can only eat so many raw vegetables \but I know how important it is to include vegetables in my diet. Using the pressure cooker to steam my vegetables at least I know that  most of the nutrients are not lost while cooking.

Saves time cooking.  I am for anything that can be done quick and in one pot.  The cook time is cut at least in half for most dishes and in some cases even more. It makes cleanup a breeze and gives me more time to enjoy eating the food without the worry of cleaning up a mess.

The price.  With the purchase of one item I received 6. The Instant Pot Lux 6 – 1  multicooker functions as a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, saute', steamer and warmer. If you are like me space I have limited space to store so many items.

Above is the old pressure cooker I used for years.

Pressure Cooker Safety

One of the main concerns with a pressure cooker is Safety.  They can be dangerous if not used correctly but so can a regular pan of boiling water.  Just read the directions and follow them also the new pressure cookers have several safety features. There is a link to 10 safety features built in to an Instant Pot pressure cooker on my Pressure Cooker Chicken Recipe page.

My daughter in law has been using it to cook items like pumpkin and squash for baby food it steams them just perfect and then its just a matter of mashing them with a potato masher.  The perfect baby food with no additives.  The best way to ensure your little one is getting the healthiest food possible.
